Interviewing Andrew Harris, a KSUB promotions director in charge of 'Locals Only'
The opportunity arose and I got to ask Andrew Harris, the founder and current director of Locals Only, a few questions about the ordeal of making and maintaining it:
Bridget: What is 'Locals Only?'
Andrew: Locals Only is my way of trying to bring the utterly amazing Seattle local music scene to the students of SU and the audience of KSUB.
Bridget: Why was 'Locals Only' started?
Andrew: I found myself going to a ton of local shows that were awesome, and wishing some of my less-than-21 friends were able to come. That got me thinking about the incredible resource we have in KSUB, and I thought that there had to be a way to bring the two together in a way that would benefit the bands and KSUB in the form of publicity, and the audience by way of getting to see the amazing musical acts that Seattle has to offer,
Bridget: What made you come up with the idea for it?
Andrew: The lack of a desire to deal with campus politics in planing events, as well as needing to do something big to make a name for KSUB
Bridget: How did you begin the process? How many events are booked for the remaining 2011 year? Are there set performances for 2012?
Andrew: I called every band member I knew, and pleaded and begged until I filled every, single Friday from August 23-December 16. All Fridays are booked in 2011. We are currently booking winter and spring quarters.
Bridget: Have you encountered any difficulties?
Andrew: Scheduling that many bands is tough in any situation, but not having any money to sweeten the deal has been problematic. Also, getting a band to possibly forgo a paying gig on a friday night to come do our thing is kind of a tough sell. Luckily the bands that I tend to work with aren't just in it for the money.
Bridget: What are you hoping 'Locals Only' will do for KSUB?
Andrew: Said simply, raise awareness. My goal is for KSUB to be THE source for live music on campus.  For too long we have been in the background. It's time for us to take over the SU music scene.
Bridget: What are you future expectations for 'Locals Only'
Andrew: Continuing to bring the level of music that we've seen thus far.  The bands we've had in the studio already, (Armed with Legs, Tomten and Kithkin) are bands at or near the top of their game, and the acts coming up on the calendar maintain that standard.
Bridget: Thank you very much Andrew, we look forward to upcoming ‘Locals Only’ shows!

KSUB ‘Locals Only’ Presents: Kithkin (Oct. 14, 2011)

A treat for Seattle University students, Kithkin performed this past Friday in the KSUB lounge for ‘Locals Only.’ Comprised of a quartet of students from Seattle University itself, many students consider them to be ‘SU-lebrities.’

Competitors in Experience the Music Project’s ‘Sound Off!’ back in Spring of 2011 and Seattle University’s 2011 ‘Battle of the Bands,’ most students are familiar with Kithkin after they played at SU’s Quadstock in 2011.

Soon to release their newest album this coming Saturday (10-22-11), “Takers and Leavers,” the ‘Locals Only’ crowd got a sneak preview. Around 50 attendees were expected, over 70 showed up - the room temperature was raised several degrees. With the room at a constant full, some attendees even had to step outside of the lounge for a breather.

With the whoops, howls and heavy drum beats Kithkin is reputed for, the crowd of this past Friday’s ‘Locals Only’ jumped about and swung their hair every which way. President of KSUB, Geoff Vincent streamed the show in KSUB’s studio for live listeners. Vincent said he was impressed with the turn out, he noted the growth of the crowd for ‘Local’s Only’ was increasing each week. Before Kithkin’s performance was Tomten’s (10-7-11,) another band that was involved in EMP’s ‘Battle of the Bands.’

Next to perform is another SU band who call themselves Ambulance (10-21-11). Turn out is expected to be high, as the band is composed of freshmen students. For those around Seattle University, KSUB invites you to RSVP on the event page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=280797211940518 If not, KSUB encourages streaming the show online at: www.ksubseattle.org under ‘Listen Live’

Locals Only

‘Locals Only’ is an ongoing project of KSUB, Seattle University’s student radio station (89.1 FM.)

Beginning in the start of the 2011 school year, native bands of Seattle perform in the KSUB lounge every Friday night at 8pm. KSUB is located in the basement of Campion Hall at Seattle University. If one cannot make it to the show, they have the option of streaming it live through iTunes at: www.ksubseattle.com under ‘Listen Live.’ For those able to make it, it is free of cost and KSUB encourages bringing friends to the event, the more the merrier.

When not putting on shows, Seattle University students and alumni DJs of KSUB: play music, hold interviews, discuss interests and events during their allotted time.
